Stump Grinding & Removal with Tapson's Tree Service

A stump isn’t just ugly — it’s a trip hazard, a mower killer, a termite and fungus host, and a permanent hole in your landscaping plan. We take it out properly.

Grinding flush with the lawn looks finished for about one season — then the crown settles, the grass dies over it, and you have a dip full of decaying wood. We grind well below grade and take out the flaring surface roots along with it, so the area behaves like normal soil again.

Planning to replant in the same spot, pour concrete, or set a post? Tell us — that changes how deep we go.

How it works

From first call to finished job

  1. Step 1

    Tell us about your trees

Trimming, removal, stumps or storm damage: tell us how many trees, roughly how tall, and what's nearby. A photo helps.

  2. Step 2

    Look at the job

The trees are checked for health and hazards, along with everything around them: the house, fences, driveways, power lines and access to the yard.

  3. Step 3

    A clear quote

You get a quote that spells out what will be trimmed or removed, how, and whether wood, brush and stumps are hauled away, chipped or left for you.

  4. Step 4

    The work and the cleanup

Limbs are lowered in sections where needed, then the brush is chipped or hauled off and the work area raked clean.

What clients say

4.8

“They were amazing. Very professional with good communication. They were cautious of the house and fence line, taking down some Russian olive trees. Which the backyard was taken over by those trees. They were quick and efficient and a nice cleanup job after they were complete. The pricing was very reasonable would definitely recommend them to any friends or family.”

Kirsten Murphy

“We had a large branch break but was somewhat still attached to our tall tree. Tapson's was able to come within the hour, after hours, safely remove the branch while keeping the rest of the tree intact. They were mindful of the house and fence and thoughtfully planned how to safely remove the branch. They got all of the branches and chipped it. I'd recommend Tapson's again and next time, they would be my first call.”

Jennifer Fonnesbeck

“The team showed up on time with all of the right equipment and safety gear to do the work. The work was tricky, the tree hung over a fence and my covered patio. They did a great job!”

FAQ

Stump Grinding & Removal: common questions

Should I grind the stump or have it removed?

Grinding is faster, less disruptive and leaves the roots to break down naturally in the soil. Full stump removal digs out the root ball, which leaves a large hole and disturbs much more of the yard; it's usually only needed when something will be built right where the tree stood.

Can I plant a new tree where the old one was?

It's better to plant a few feet away. Even after grinding, roots and wood chips stay in the soil and break down slowly, which makes it hard to dig a proper planting hole and can starve young roots of nitrogen. Grass and small plants do fine once topsoil is added.

Will the roots grow back?

Most trees don't regrow once the stump is ground. Some species, such as certain poplars, willows and locusts, can send up shoots from the remaining roots; cutting those back as they appear eventually exhausts the roots.
